Tomato Growing Tips
We all love homegrown tomatoes but, can you grow a healthy plant and in turn, have a larger harvest of tomatoes? There are a few tomato growing tips that avid tomato grows use on a constant basis to achieve such goals. Follow these extremely easy tips for growing tomato plants and you can see the same kind of results in your next harvest.
Because tomatoes love heat, you can preheat the soil in your garden before you plant your tomato plants. Just cover the area with black or red plastic for a couple of weeks before you intend to plant. With the extra degrees of warmth that the plastic creates, you will receive earlier tomatoes.
Another of our tomato growing tips to growing a healthier tomato plant is to plant the tomato plant deep into the soil. Typically you should plant your seedlings after they have developed at least six leaves. When you plant your seedlings leave only the top four leaves showing. The tomato plant has the ability to grow roots along all of the stem that is underground. The result is a stronger root system and healthier plant. Another method is to dig a shallow trench and plant the tomato sideways in the ground. The plant will straighten up and grow towards the sun but extra care needs to be taken when you are inserting the cage or pole so that it does not pierce the root system.
There are several tips to maintaining the plant itself throughout the growing season that some tomato growers do not know. One tip is to keep up on the pruning of the plant particularly the suckers. Tomato growers can remove the suckers that develop in the joint of two branches of the plant. These suckers will not bear any fruit and take valuable energy from the rest of the plant. Removing some of the leaves will help the fruit ripen by allowing the sun to reach it. Just make sure that you don’t remove to many leaves. The leaves are what provide sugars for the roots and fruit, if you remove to many your tomatoes will suffer. You should also ensure that you keep up on the watering of the tomato plants. You should water them deeply and regularly while they are developing; missing a few days of watering and trying to make up for it later on leads to blossom end rot and cracking. Another tip on watering tomato plants is to lessen the watering once the fruit begins to ripen. By lessening the amount of water the tomato will concentrate it’s sugars in the fruit. Don’t hold back on the water to much because the plant may wilt and become stressed. Stress can lead the tomato to drop its blossoms and possibly it fruit.
These tomato growing tips are easy to do and will support the health of the tomato plant. By adding these practices into your tomato gardening routine you will enjoy an increase in your crop and better flavored tomatoes.
